What is three-way conversion?

A conversion tee is a type of pipe fitting that is used to connect three pipes of different sizes in a piping system.
It has one inlet for bigger pipe and two outlet for smaller pipes.

The larger size pipes are usually called “legs”, while the smaller sizes are called “branches”.

A conversion tee allows the flow of fluid or gas to be distributed from a larger pipe to two smaller pipes because it reduces the flow or size of the pipe as it branches.

Types of three-way conversion

1/3-way standard conversion:

This type of conversion tee has two openings at one end of the tee that are of different sizes and one opening at the other end.

2/three-way concentric conversion:

In this type of tee, the two openings are of different sizes, but are aligned in a straight line and maintain the same centerline for fluid flow.

3/three-way eccentric conversion:

Similar to the three-way concentric conversion, this type also has two openings of different sizes arranged in a straight line.

However, the alignment is offset, creating an odd design.

4/three-way pipe to manifold conversion: This type of three-way conversion is used to connect a larger pipe to a manifold or a smaller pipe.

This tee allows you to connect a pipe of different sizes to a system with a manifold.

5/branch conversion tee: This tee has a larger main branch and a smaller branch that separates from it.

It is designed to divide the fluid flow in two different directions.

6/cross-conversion three-way: Cross-conversion three-way, in addition to the main branch, has an additional horizontal branch and two vertical branches. It is used to divide the fluid flow in three different directions.

Note: Here we have introduced some examples of conversion tees. These tees have different types and their types are different according to the industry, application and standard specifications.

Using three-way conversion

Diverter tees are mainly used in piping systems to direct or divert fluid flow in different directions. Some common uses of the conversion tee are:

  • Piping systems:

Conversion tees are commonly used in residential and commercial plumbing systems to connect multiple pipes of different sizes.

They are used to reduce the size of the pipe at a certain point, which makes it possible to change the flow rate or connect pipes of different diameters.

  • HVAC systems:

In heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, a conversion tee is used to divert or merge air flow in different directions.

To connect air ducts of different sizes that allow the distribution of conditioned air to different rooms or areas.

  • Irrigation systems:

Conversion tees are used in irrigation systems to control the flow of water from the main supply line to different parts of the system.

They can be used to reduce pipe size for individual sprinklers or to combine several smaller pipes into one larger pipe.

  • Industrial processes:

In industrial environments, conversion tees are used in various processes such as chemical and petrochemical industries, treatment plants and wastewater management systems.

They are used to direct, merge, or reduce the flow of fluids or gases based on specific process requirements.

In general, three-way transformers play an important role in ensuring efficient and effective fluid flow management in a wide variety of industries and applications.
